![]() The likes of Free Guy, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and presumably Eternals will get at least 45 days exclusively in theatres. Disney swears that Pixar’s Seeing Red will get a theatrical release next year. The “day-and-date” versus “theatrical window” debate may be a moot point. That’s good news for those who believe in the value of theatrical exclusivity. ![]() Either audiences don’t know about the shortened theatrical window or they don’t care. We’ll see if its box office dips when it debuts on Paramount+ in around three weeks. That A Quiet Place 2 is not available to stream may be icing on the cake. Those who only see the event movie of the moment will next spend their time and money on F9 and/or Black Widow, with almost everything else potentially in July fighting for scraps. Spiral is the ninth installment in a gruesome horror franchise, In the Heights and Conjuring 3 (which is about to quadruple its $39 million budget, albeit still with grosses lower than normal for Conjuring flicks) are available on HBO Max and both Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Wrath of Man (with a shockingly good $95 million worldwide) is the kind of thing that folks usually catch up with in post-theatrical.īy default, A Quiet Place part II, with rave reviews, a well-known cast (Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, a cameo-ing John Krasinski), a marquee director in Krasinski and its place as a sequel to a beloved PG-13 horror original, is the event movie of the moment for older kids and adults who just want to see a big movie. One huge reason for its success thus far is that it’s the go-to pick over the last month for general moviegoers who maybe go to the theaters once a month and/or are selective in terms of what justifies a babysitter. So, frankly, a $90 million debut for a $200 million finish could be considered awfully close to “business as usual” (especially with the Disney+ and PVOD variables) for both tentpoles.Ī Quiet Place part II remains the only biggie thus far in 2021 that absolutely played about as well in 2021 as it might have in 2020. Or, conversely, as a “years-too-late” prequel starring a dead MCU superhero, maybe Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow would have played closer to Doctor Strange ($88 million debut and $238 million domestic finish). In normal times, Black Widow might have snagged an opening closer to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 ($146 million) than Guardians of the Galaxy ($94 million), and potentially flirted with $350 million domestic. In normal times, F9 would expect a $100 million-plus opening and (on par with Fate of the Furious and Fast & Furious 6) a total over/under $220 million, unless online nostalgia over Sung Kang bled into the general audience.
